On Christmas Eve in 1940, only days after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, passengers board the Christmas Zephyr for a ride across the Illinois prairie to their homes for the holiday. As the Zephyr plunges into the winter night, a Pullman conductor, a mother with a small child, a soldier and a priest all struggle with the uncertainty thrust into their lives by world events.
